Disadvantages to Liquid Oxygen

·         Patient has to monitor reservoir carefully to make sure he/she does not run out.

·        Patient must be at home at time of delivery because the supplier must get into the home to fill reservoir. Patient has to waste time waiting for the supplier to arrive. Every 2-3 weeks.

·         Liquid Oxygen evaporates. Liquid portables will be fully depleted in 24 hours if used or not.

·         Liquid Oxygen users are dependent on their liquid reservoirs. Liquid users cannot be away from these reservoirs for more than a day.

·        Liquid oxygen’s primary danger is a patient can be easily burned when filling portable tanks.

·         Many patients have trouble filling portable tanks because of their dexterity and lack of steadiness.

·         Liquid oxygen continuously vents and should always be used in a well-ventilated area.

·         Users often freeze the portable to the reservoirs. Patient has to have alternative means for oxygen till portable thaws.

·         Under humid conditions, liquid oxygen draws attention because it will produce a noticeable “smoke”, snow, and condensation around the base of portable unit.

Patient only receives one portable tank. At 2 LPM bottle will only last 6 to 8 hrs with a conserving device and patient has to be around their reservoir again.
